A Very Braidy Cowl
This cowl was inspired by the adorable Sixteen Cable hat designed by a very clever french designer who
creates beautiful knits. If you'd like to make the hat, you can purchase your copy of the pattern here on
ravelry.
Anyway, I loved the thick cables so much that I thought incorporating them into a cowl would be really
cool.
For a cowl 11.5 inches in diameter. 9 inches in width (slight stretched).
Materials:
Worsted Weight Yarn (about 200 yards)
Size 8 needles
Cable needle
Cast on 54 stitches.
Row 1 – sl 1, p 1, k24, p2, k 24, p2
Row 2 – sl 1, k 1, p24, k 2, p24, k2
Row 3 – same as row 1
Row 4 – same as row 2
Row 5 – sl 1, p1, k 8, sl 8 stitches to cable in front, k 8, k 8 from cable needle, p 2, k 8, sl 8 stitches to cable
in front, k 8, k 8 from cable needle, p 2.
Row 6 – same as row 2
Rows 7, 9, 11, 13 – same as row 1
Rows 8, 10, 12, 14 – same was row 2
Row 15 -- sl 1, p 1, sl 8 stitches to cable needle in back, k 8, k 8 from cable needle, k8 p 2, sl 8 stitches to
cable needle in back, k 8, k 8 from cable needle, k8 p 2.
Row 16 – same as row 2
Rows 17, 19, 21, 23 – same as row 1
Rows 18, 20, 22, 24 – same was row 2
Repeat rows 5-24, 5 times more times, for a total of 6 times. Repeat rows 5-20 once (for a total of 140
rows). Cast off next row.
Sew cast on edge to cast off edge by whip stitching the two edges together through the back loops with
right sides facing.
If you would like to avoid having a seam, cast on using a provisional cast on and then graft the two edges
together at the end.
Variations:
1. Instead of slipping every first stitch, on every row, knit the first stitch, and slip the last stitch purlwise.
2. If you would like to avoid having a seam, cast on using a provisional cast on and then graft the two edges
together at the end.
